Moral Uncertainties Prove Detrimental for ACVOW

Questions have come to light for a San Diego non-profit service referred to as the American Combat Veterans of War or ACVOW. The organization possesses an a workplace at the Veterans Administration medical center in La Jolla, CA and is managed nearly exclusively by volunteers. They claim to help vets secure their benefits and boast about their methods to help warriors with Ptsd. The problem? No accountability. The staff has been around for more than ten years, but operates below the radar. A check on Charity Navigator as well as the Better Business Bureau’s Charity Index make absolutely no reference to ACVOW. Nor does ACVOW possess significant record of the results they’ve enjoyed aiding veterans and active duty personnel. Additionally, ACVOW just lost a small claims court battle for neglecting to pay one of its contractors. A Utah News report from June of this past year suggests that one of ACVOW’s reps used donations from the group in order to bail out an anti-immigration activist from jail, an apparent breach of the terms for the majority of 501(c)(3) non-profit corporations. This post is not implying that that ACVOW is undertaking in unlawful activity. There are undoubtedly severe ethical challenges and potential contributors should be mindful whenever contributing to organizations without financial accountability.
